What’s in a name? Well, for these two restaurants their names speak to the fun, unique re-imagining regarding the dishes they serve. You’re definitely going to want to swing by these new spots, which coincidentally are both located on West Third Street in Los Angeles!
FONUTS as in “faux” donuts implies that this donut shop could serve super healthy wheat germ or sarsaparilla donuts, but contraire, mon cher, which means “my friend” in French. There’s nothing fake about the flavorful taste of these yummy donuts. I bet your asking why the “Fo”? Well without Wheat germ or asparagus a couple of innovative pastry chefs decided to make a healthier, but delicious donut by baking instead of deep-frying them in a vat of saturated oil. Nifty huh! A must have is the chorizo cheddar or the banana chocolate. The menu also includes exquisite gluten and wheat free donuts. Word of warning you will want to sample them all! Now don’t think your only going to grab a pastry and go because Fonuts serves Lamil coffee and an assortment of teas. This cozy restaurant is a perfect place to relax and have a fonut and coffee! I think they’ve just coined a new word! So who are the ingenious folks behind such a simple solution for such a guilty pleasure? Waylynn Lucas, former pastry chef for renowned chef Jose Andres partnered with her longtime friend and pastry wiz Nancy Truman and opened five months ago. The steady stream of traffic makes you think it’s been open for far longer. For hours and a list of their Fonuts check out their website.
SIMPLE THINGS. I’ve got two words to describe it: “simply scrumptious”! Not only is Simple Things a restaurant and sandwich shop, but they also serve pies! Who doesn’t love a good pie!? No one I know. The best part is that the pies come in an assortment of sizes and flavors from Salted Caramel, Key Lime, Peach and Missouri Mud. You can have your pie a la mode to boot! Plus, like I said earlier, Simple Things is also a restaurant/sandwich shop. The food is savory, wholesome, and unbelievably fresh. Give your usual spot a break and have brunch at Simple Things; you’ll be pleasantly surprised by their simplistic spin to your favorite dishes that adds rich flavor like corned beef hash with sweet potatoes or an avocado melt with apricot chutney. Both are heavenly. The restaurant is casual and the wait staff are extremely helpful and friendly. For more information and a full menu check out their website.
