Fela

Crazy Names. Crazy Good Times.

Throw a rock and no doubt you will hit a billboard or a building that’s holding an event behind its walls. C’mon! Don’t throw the rock at a glass door! Los Angeles is one of those fanciful towns where there is always something to do! So don’t sit at home being bored; rub the guck from your eyes and get out there. And I have two very lively shows that will get you out and about and having a grand time.

FELA! That one word and I bet your mouth is hanging open, “OOOOHHH, I heard that play was in town.” It is until Sun., Jan. 22 at the Ahmanson Theater, so you still have a few days to catch it. You know how I love to dish infotainment—that’s real entertainment information. FELA comes to Los Angeles from New York’s Broadway where it was a smashing success, and it continues to wow, inspire and bring people to their feet in dance in the City of Angels. Presented by Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter and Will and Jada Pinket Smith, FELA tells the story of Nigerian born, Afro-beat pioneer and activist Fela Kuti. Fela’s remarkable life is chronicled in this stunningly brilliant, critically acclaimed play. Go, dance in the aisle, and tap your feet to the beat, sing along no one will hear if you’re off key. All I know is I haven’t heard one single body say they didn’t enjoy this play! Trust, you will love every exciting second of this revolutionary show. For showtimes and tickets visit the Ahmanson website.

OVO! So in keeping with unusual names for shows, OVO is another breathtaking performance taking place in Santa Monica at the Santa Monica Pier under the big top. OVO is brought to us by a familiar group that we already know and love — Cirque du Soleil. Now, what is OVO? OVO is a thrilling adventure into the colorful ecosystem of insects. That’s right, I said bugs! They take us into the heart of where they work, eat, crawl, flutter, play, fight and love—free love for all bugs. OVO is non-stop wonder and amazement like only Cirque du Soleil can offer. It’s not the animation a “Bugs Life”; OVO is far more fanciful and edgy. Who knew the ecosystem of insects could be an entertaining rollercoaster of chaos and order. I suspect it’s much like our individual ecosystems when we wake up for work and realize there is no coffee — the chaos begins! Unlike our lives, Cirque du Soleil makes the show far more dazzling. Mix it up and check out this cool show. Plus, you can’t beat Santa Monica Pier at night. To purchase tickets, preview the show and for more information check out the official OVO website.
